Region's Junior Achievement Named Peak Performer

Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana has been chosen to receive the 2014-15 JA USA Peak Performance Team Award. The award recognizes 15 PEAK AWARDsuperior annual performance by a JA Area team in achieving growth in students reached or contact hours delivered, while sustaining financial and operational soundness.

Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana, which makes up a 30-county territory, was one of only 17 areas nationwide chosen to receive this recognition. The award was presented at the Junior Achievement National Volunteer Summit, on March 8th in New York City.

“This award never would have been obtainable if not for the amazing team of employees, teachers, and volunteers who dedicate their lives to educating children of all ages in the areas of financial literacy, workforce readiness, and entrepreneurship,” JA President Lena Yarian said in a statement.

Also at the Summit, board member M. James Johnston accepted the Golden Achievement Award, which is given to 10 individuals who “exemplify the ideals of creativity, effectiveness, and a deep commitment to the future of our nation’s youth.”

Educators Help JA U.S.A. Redevelop Programs

As part of Junior Achievement USA’s redevelopment cycle, the National Office is revising two middle school programs:  JA It’s My Future® and JA It’s My Business®. Both will be available to be delivered through an online learning platform, and taught by a community volunteer. Only nine JA Areas across the country, including Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana, have been invited to field test the new material and provide feedback for these redeveloped programs.

During the development of these technology based programs, the field testing with area classrooms will be implemented in two phases of production, alpha and beta testing. Educators and Volunteers will receive training and all necessary materials and instructions to successfully lead students through specific session(s) to be tested. All participants will take a survey after each session, and a JA staff member will be in the room during the testing to record observations and collect feedback from participants.

We are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside the following schools in northern Indiana, to assist JA U.S.A. in their program development:  Heritage Jr./Sr. High School, Lakeside Middle School, North Side High School, and Kekionga Middle School.

Program Material Rebuild Saves JA Thousands

2015.16 3RiversRebuildVolsOn February 15th, volunteers from 3 Rivers Federal Credit Union joined forces to assist in an effort to help Junior Achievement rebuild JA program kits. This huge undertaking enables JA to save thousands of dollars each year in order to provide programs to our regional areas at a lower cost than most JA areas across the country – allowing hundreds more students to experience JA!

The volunteers spent hours sorting through returned program materials, counting paperwork for future JA students, and rebuilding new volunteer kits. In one day, these volunteers were able to rebuild 88 kits; saving JA $7,782.72!

JA appreciates all of those who generously gave their time for this program material rebuild, and thanks the other organizations who have generously given their time to assist with kit rebuilds throughout the year, including Lincoln Financial Group, Kohl’s, and The Arc.

If you or your organization would like to schedule your own rebuild day with JA, please contact Susie Kaiser at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

JA Working to Reach All Students

16 AWSJABTIn January, Junior Achievement began working to serve students who historically have not been able to visit JA BizTown® due to moderate or severe disabilities. Since then, over eighty students have had a one hour abbreviated visit to JA BizTown. The students deposited a paycheck at the bank and then used their money to buy a beverage and popcorn at the restaurant. The students will return to JA BizTown on Monday, April 18th to have the full JA BizTown simulation experience.

“Through this initiative, JANI will enable all EACS students to enjoy a meaningful and ability-appropriate visit to JA BizTown. Additionally, this pilot experience will be used as a model; after this school year, JANI plans to offer similar opportunities to all participating school districts.”  Nicole Penar, Program Manager - JA BizTown
